The souless application of the law is what the ACLU does.  Worse, it seeks out cases that support plaintiffs which society shuns due to criminal or immoral behavior.

For this reason, I do not like or condone the efforts of the ACLU in practically all cases.  Once in a great while they do something correct, but that is a rare moment.
