When was the last time either party presented a field of perfect candidates? I only go back to 76 and can recall similar arguments. Heck, in 80, the dems had Gov Moonbeam, Killa and the peanut farmer and Peanuts was a sitting prez. The GOP Fielded 9 candidates, tore each other up and had one run 3rd party. 84 brought 8 dems before Mondale won the nomination, 88 gave us 12, including Dukakis. 92 brought Tsongas, Bob Kerry, Moonbeam, commie Harkin, and Bubba. Trying to remember where Rev Jackson fell in. The dems in 04 gave us that rascal Edwards, Hanoi Janes swift boat buddy, The Screech, and the cross dressing general. All in all, the remnants of the 12 Repub field stack up nicely.
