From what I recall from the original reports alcohol was a factor but I don't know if the results of the autopsy were ever disclosed. The Marine Police said everyone on the boat was drinking but I think that was pure speculation, but not altogether unreasonable.

Either way, it is apparent that she accidentally fell off the front of the boat and the driver did not react quickly enough to prevent her from being struck by the propeller. And of course since he was supposedly drinking at the time he ran for cover instead of doing the right thing. Maybe if he had rendered aid she might have survived and that is the real tragedy here. But even if not, his miserable decision only made things worse. His alcohol consumption likely had no impact on her falling off the front of the boat and even if he were stone-cold sober it was night and they were moving and he might not have been able to react in time to prevent her from being injured. But none of that speculation matters because he was drinking and he did not react properly.

But this is an abject lesson to anyone operating a boat. Even if consumption of alcohol did not contribute to an accident, you are taking a huge risk not only for the safety of those on your boat as well as other around you, but you put yourself at risk for criminal charges in the event of an accident in which your consumption of alcohol had no bearing. What would be a tragic accident turns into a crime.
