I was wondering why it took so long to identify some of the victims, since everyone in the building must wear a badge. Use of a shotgun could make face to badge corrlation difficult.
Everyone questions how the guy could get into such a "secure" building. I have been in that building at least a dozen, maybe as many as 15 or 20 times, and can tell you that one rent-a-cop is all that is between the front door and free access throughout the building. There are about 5 or 6 card-swipe turnstiles at that entrance and another that is a walk-through passage by the guard. At that time of the morning there can be a steady, unbroken stream of people three and four abreast coming in, and the rent-a-cop is busy making sure visitors are properly badged and that they give up their cell phones if the phones have a camera. It would be quite easy for someone to walk up and put a round in his head (although that apparently didn't happen yesterday) and keep going.
That being said, if his badge authorized him onto the Yard, then it might also authorize him into 197. That part is so far unclearto me, but if he was authorized in 197, he would not have to pass through a metal detector to get in.
One final note regarding security clearances. One has to have a Secret clearance to work in 197. To get a Secret clearance, one only has to pass a Natioal Agency Check - which means no matter how big a dirt bag a person might be, if they avoided being convicted of something that gets posted to those national level databases, they can get a Secret clearance. Bacground Investiations don't start until you get to the Top Secret level.
I have probably a dozen or more acquaintances working in that buiding, two of which are very good friends. Thankfully none were on the list of casualties.
