I somewhat disagree with your post.  My view of pit bulls is that they do have certain characteristics or whatever that may be different from other dogs.  One example,..I have noticed (not read or formed an opinion from reading) that pits do not like high pitched noises such as children screaming.  This may be why they are sometimes (not almost every day) attacked.  I have noticed that they do not like agression.  Children playing together may possibly look agressive in the dogs eye.  I have noticed that they are territorial and protective of certain objects that belong to them.  I've learned to watch for certain postures and a glare in their eye and to be cautious and proactive at times.  I agree that you possibly can't teach them to not have these certain characteristics.  But I also believe that pit owners can train themselves to be responsible owners, ..to know their dogs personalities and be ready to handle situations.  My experience, with my pit, is that she is gentle.  She has been exposed to children.  She has been exposed to infants.  Exposed to other animals (except cats) and I have yet to have any hesitation or fear that something bad will occur.  I once was ingnorant about the breed and feared it.  I stayed clear of them.  But once I became an owner (not entirely by choice) I educated myself about them and find mine to be an excellent pet.  I've learned several of my neighbors have them and do not hesitate to pet each as they stroll the sidewalk.  I practice responsiblity.  I know boundries.  I understand people fear them and respect that ...for the most part.  I will confess that when asked what type of dog she is, I sometimes respond with "chinese water dog" and most seem quit interested and want to touch her.  I'm sure most would steer clear if I said pit bull.  By no means is she perfect, but I DO have the feelie-goods about having her.  I've only been bitten once by a dog..and that was by my labrador.  My belief is "don't dislike the animal,.. dislike the irresponsible owner."
