Interesting article but what is missing in all this is that he has to pay for housing anyway.  He should do what my 24-year old son did.  He bought a 3BR house in East Atlanta (not near the top of the market so equity is not an issue for him) and has two roomates with an ocasional airbnb squatter and he pays almost nothing for his mortgage.  Between the roomates and the aribnb tenants they pay it all.  Also splits utlities so he also saves money that way.  Now if he were to get married it would be a different equation but for now he is living the dream.
