There is a rare form of aquatic plant that resides in the area of some of the boat launches. It forms a massive carpet of green balls and are an indication of health of the lake.

The species is mainly found in the areas of Europe previously covered in glaciers (Northern-Europe), and in several places in Japan. It has been found in North America, but it is rare.

I never would have guessed that something I took for granted as a child would both be rare and an important indicator of the health and well being of the lake.

Appearently they can be sold as souvenirs or placed into home aquariums.
