I have been investing since the early 80's and since that time, I have seen a number of major chaotic market events: the 1987 market crash, the Dot-Com bubble burst, the 9-11 sell-off, the Great Recession and myriad other substantial corrections that come to mind. And like most investors, my portfolio has taken a significant hit during the past week. While these events are always very unsettling, they are inevitable and ultimately healthy for the financial markets, in the LONG run. In the short term, yeah they suck, but had I not been actively investing for the past nearly 40 years, I wouldn't have anywhere near the assets I have now, and will have even after this correction runs its course, so keeping a healthy perspective is important during these times. And also remember, they are only paper losses unless you sell!
