Remington for what has to be some very poor reasons decided to settle with some Sandy Hook families. I can tell you that this opens a can of worms for pretty much any product. Someone hits you with a Suburban? Sue GM. You now have precedence. And even if the driver stole the Suburban no worries, you can still sue GM. In my experience the decision to settle involved insurers that were trying to cut their losses from an emotional jury award. If this holds and is used as precedent, the gun control crowd will no longer need to repeal the 2nd amendment. They can sue gun manufacturers out of business. But it won't stop there....this will apply to other products which will drive up prices and drive manufacturers out of business. Just look at the cost of an airplane today. Around 40% of the cost of a plane is the liability insurance. Parts cost a lot for the same reason. Every time a plane crashes, the vast majority of which are a result of pilot error, the lawyers go after the manufacturer.
I can't pretend to understand why Remington settled but they have likely destroyed their entire industry. There will be a multitude of copycat lawsuits now that the plaintiffs lawyers smell blood in the water.....or hear the sound of the ambulance.
