I found it very odd too.  If my husband was in the hospital, the last thing I would do is leave town.  Especially if he had already had a stroke and was experiencing with recovery.  I'm not sure that you aren't onto something - like jim stepping down and she taking his place.  I guess it is possible that she was not to contact him during his treatment, because she may in part, be part of his depression in demanding he continue to run.  

I tihnk he is an idiot, but I feel a little sorry for him if his wife abandons him in his hour of need.  Clinical depression, especially severe enough to be hospitalized - did they think he was a potential risk to himself or others? - is no laughing matter and after he leaves the hospital, there will be outpatient treatments.
