If the lake level WERE to be dropped so low that it would take 2-3 years to refill (which won't happen except during a severe drought or if Atlanta drains the Tallapoosa to water its yards), it would be too low for almost everyone to use in the summer. The economic impact would be devestating. That is reason in itself not to lower the lake down to 460. Besides, one good tropical storm or a spring with heavy rains would throw those predictions off pretty quickly. I can't remember what the lowest level I have ever seen is, but I think it was the low 470's. The lake still filled up just fine the next summer. One other thing to bring up. Having the lake around 480 in the summertime would be very dangerous. There are a lot of people on the lake now that do not know about the rocks, sunken islands, etc that are just a few feet under the surface when the lake is full. In the late '80s, there was a drought year when the lake was down 5 feet or more most of the summer. I remember seeing boats hitting rocks and trenching long shallow points with their lower units. Summer levels down 10 feet or more would be a hazard to newbies and oldtimers alike.
