Two injured in Lake Martin boating accidents

Two people were hospitalized in two separate boating accidents on Saturday, according to Alabama Marine Police Sgt. Gary Buchanan.

One accident involved two boats, while the other involved a personal watercraft that crashed into a boat's wake.

Michella Crawford, 29, of Montgomery suffered non-life-threatening injuries when she and fellow rider Donald Eckis, 31, of Opelika were thrown from the craft after slamming into a wake.

Crawford was airlifted to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment, while Eckis was arrested and charged by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Department for boating under the influence and operating a watercraft without a license, according to Lt. Mitford Fontain.

Eckis was later released on $1,000 bond.

The accident, which was reported around 7 p.m., occurred near the Indian Shores Subdivision, according to Fontain.

"I think she lost consciousness when she fell into the water," Fontain said. "So they had her lifeflighted to Opelika."

Earlier in the day, a teenage driver of one boat ran into another near the Parker Creek area in Coosa County, sending one passenger of the second boat to the hospital with cuts sustained from shattered glass.

"The operator was distracted when he dropped his iPod," Buchanan said. "He tried to pick it up and ran into the boat."

Doug Brasell, 30, of Millbrook was treated and released from Russell Medical Center after being cut by the glass.

"It's fortunate that no one was seriously hurt or killed," Buchanan said.
