First of all the lake is not properly marked. When I brought this up a few years ago I was promptly chastized and reminded that if I was a native LM person I would have intuitively known where the hazards were and the lake didn't need any markers (and if I didn't like it I should go home).

If you look at the standard markers for Al waterways it's just like GA. or anywhere else. There should be a a stick that indicates "don't pass between the marker and the shoreline" and a different marker for "stay away from". There is not one of these sticks on the lake. You get to guess if it is simply a stay away marker or a don't get between this and the shoreline marker.

I suspect that for all the BS about this subject there is not enough $$ and interested parties on the lake to fix this problem. Until then you need to take a local with you to consult the oracles about which way to turn on one of these markers..... The poor schmuck that you saw get stuck was probably just following standard shoreline marking, common everywhere else but LM.
