Kingfish. My husband and I were talking about this the other night and I told him I bet if I asked the two young people in my office (ages 20 and 22) what Memorial Day signified, they would recognize it only as a day off work, with pay. I remember when I was a little girl during WWII (and some on this Form are at least as old as I am), we had a fabric "flag" that we put in the window. It was dark blue, as I recall, and had a star on it. It signified that my father (or any family member) was serving in active duty with the military.

While I don't believe anyone could be unaware of the various conflicts our military is currently involved in, I wonder if the population's sensitivity to it might be hightened considerably if there was a physical, visible indication of how wide-ranging our country's involvement is, and the toll on its citizens who are without one or more family members. I have no idea how many "stars in the windows" I would see in my neighborhood alone, or in businesses where the owner or employee(s) might be over seas.

I realize there are widely divergent opinions on this Form about Iraq and other conflicts (I don't believe it was ever actually declared as a 'war,' much like Korea and Viet Nam), but I cannot believe that there is even one person in this country who doesn't wholeheartedly support every service man and woman member of the military. It is for them that I wish their family members could display some outward sign of the sacrifice they too are making.

Just a thought for this Memorial Day...
