I heard this on the radio this a.m. It wasn't a local station, but it was one that is just a few miles from the lake. What they said was

rain this month: 2.52 inches
rain thru this day last year: 4.63 inches
normal rainfall thru today: 4.81 inches

in other words, last January was only a little drier than usual, but this January has been very dry. I thought it was wetter than normal, I guess that just goes to show that the last year has messed up our perspective.
