According to APCOs lakes website - lakes.alabamapower.com - the lake is currently approaching 513ft MSL. (512.96 Feet). Don't know how the level on this site get's updated, but it isn't current at the moment.

Estimates are a peak of 515.5 but we'll see. The lake rose over 8 feet in the last 24 hours. I understand that when it reaches this level and still rising APCO goes into 'flood control mode' and releases are governed by a set of rules written but the feds.

Problem with just dumping it out is that there is a lot of flooding downstream already. Dumping Smith to make room for more and prevent a breech of the dam would cause major problems downstream.

I'm sure the thousands of people who live along the river downstream are thankful there was room in the reservoir to hold all of this potentially harmful flood water. ;-)
