From what I am told from talking to my mechanic is that if you have an I/O and leave the foot in the water the block will not freeze. Actually did it last year during the drought with my pontoon over the winter and sure enough everything was OK come Spring.

Cat can tell you whether the above is in fact true or not.

Now if you take the boat out of the water totally different story, have to pull the drain plugs and leave the foot all the way down so water drains out. Also need to pull the water pump hose and drain them as well. That is at least what I do on my Mastercraft.
