We really need to be careful here to distinguish between coverage and access to health care. Yes, illegals currently have access to health care regardless of whether they have insurance or not or can afford to pay for services. What they do not have is the legal right to access Medicade and Medicare and Americans overwhelmingly oppose giving them access to taxpayer funded health insurance. So GF is wrong when he says they have "coverage".

He is right that we are already paying for them because hospitals (where they frequently go for care) pass these unpaid services along to paying customers through higher prices (i.e., it is one reason 2 tylenol in a hospital cost $9). As a society I believe we have a moral obligation to provide critical care but not primary care to illegals and others that do not have insurance (i.e., we should differentiate between treating a cold and treating pnuemonia). I also think it is a fair argument to say that the emergency room is not the most cost effective place for illegals to get their primary care. But is extending them the right to taxpayer funded insurance the right solution? I would say that the vast majority of Americans have already spoken on that matter and the answer is no. There are a number of proposals to address this problem that do not involve providing them with taxpayer funded insurance.

Having said all this, it is obvious that Obama was lying about this issue and regretfully Joe Wilson's boorish outburst has caused them to change their approach and hopefully the President will stop lying to the American people about this.

As a side note, it appears that the leftists in Congress are going to move forward with some form of sanctions. Even some on the far left think this is a mistake as does Obama. If they do this it will probably be the best thing to ever happen to the guy and will only highlight that the post-partisan world we were promised when Dems controlled the two branches of government was a fiction.
