One interesting thing I've noticed both locally and on the internet. Usually by this time, stores have a lot of merchandise that they bring in specially for the Christmas rush. More upscale items, and the kind of "gifty" things that people buy in the Christmas frenzy.

I'm noticing that the stores are not filled with inventory this year. Yes, they are "decorated" for Christmas but the surplus of "stuff" isn't there. Even the big box stores aren't filled.
And a lot more of their inventory is marked down. Lots of stores usually hold off their mark downs until just before Christmas or just after. Not this year.

I guess the retailers aren't counting on Black Friday this year to get them through. No impulse buys this year "because it's Christmas".

Have to say that I don't think this is a bad thing. Lots of people go overboard at Christmas only to wake up to January's bills. Maybe this year everyone's taking a more realistic approach. (Except Neiman Marcus, of course)
