A friend's daughter was denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, and I was shocked and concerned. After checking into it, I understand - if the insurance company has to accept these people and there is no requirement to have health insurance you will have those who will not pay premiums until they have a need for benefits. As far as the gouging insurance companies, BCBS and Kaiser are not for profit companies as I am sure others are. Since our Government is FAR more efficient than private industry, I am sure that they will do a better job at keeping costs down though.
