Are you sure that the electrical system on the engine is sending bad information to the tach? Or is the tach not processing the pulse signal properly, and giving you incorrect readings? Two ways to check. One is grab you an old tach, and see how the readings are. Other way to check (If the engine is controlled by an ECU) is to plug up a laptop or scan tool. Also, remove the tach, and look at the back of the instrument. There is a small dial that should have a 4, 6 and 8 on it. Make sure the dial is turned pointing directly at the "6".
