One day I was driving along and saw an open field that was mowed, and I thought about how odd it was that it wasn't being used for any kind of pick up game by kids in the area. I guess in the age of organized teams and play dates, kids just don't do that kind of thing anymore.

Our parents weren't interested in establishing or elevating our self esteem. If an adult said you did something wrong, then you did something wrong. And if you did something wrong and the adult got to your parents before you told on yourself, you got it double. If you got in trouble in school, your parents didn't complain to the principle or the board of education; you were in trouble at school AND at home.

And a fresh mouth would get you a slap, or a bar of soap shoved into your mouth (my mother actually did this). And your mother made good on "Wait until I get you out of here" (said through gritted teeth, usually in church). And if she said "Wait until your Father gets home", you were worried. It wasn't going to be pretty.

And I like Leno's quote. That our pledge says "under God" is the least of our problems.
