Subject:   Lake Martin - BASS Trail Update

Spoke to the powers that be this morning (about an hour phone call) and long story short:

- It is not that Lake Martin was not considered, to the best of their knowledge nobody from the City nor Tourism or economic Development Board pursued the opportunity. She did state in all fairness these individuals may not have been made fully aware of the BASS Trail as the Birmingham Convention and Tourism Chamber identified potential targeted lakes for the Trail, based on revenue generated through the sale of fishing licenses. Also the final lakes were selected by BASS.

With the above said, she did state she was more than willing and would like very much to make a trip to Alex City and meet with local community leaders to (provided me with her cell phone number, as very rarely in the office):

- Spend a day on the lake, meet with community leaders
- Review Infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants, campgrounds, boat ramp access, etc.
- entertainment and other venues
- Lake quality of fishing
- Consider Martin for inclusion on the Trail

For example Lake Mitchell requested to be on the Trail, however did not have the infrastructure.

The cost to be listed on the BASS Trail is $5,000 annually and what the BASS Trail is, is more or less a source of information (ramps, hotels, maps, etc) for recreational fishermen and women to use to help them facilitate there fishing trip to the area. Sort of like the Robert Trent Jones golf courses, for recreational golfers.

Then to host a BASS Open event, the cost is $30,000 and to be a Founding Sponsor of the BASS trails the cost is $25,000 and currently they are limiting the Founders Circle to 5, which includes a Board seat on the BASS Trail.

Also appears the BASS Trail and the BASS corporation have formed a quasi relationship to support one another to drive tourism since BASS recently relocated back to Alabama.

Found the above information to be rather interesting. Sounds like there is still an opportunity to have Martin listed on the Trail, but someone within Alex City needs to wake up and pursue this tourism / economic opportunity.

Thoughts or comments ???
