Just my 2 cents.

I have been involved with several of the past lake clean up efforts and to say the least the turn outs have been minimal in terms of the number of volunteers. Which to me is appalling as our lake is just that our lake and all Lake Martin stakeholders should be willing to take 4 hours out of their busy schedules to help this great cause. But unfortunately people are inherently lazy when they think such efforts do not benefit them directly, even thought the lake clean up efforts in fact benefit them.

What needs to be figured out is a way for each and every homeowner around the lake a way to easily dispose of their current lake debris, as out in front of our house we have old tires, rusted metal poles, an old rusted out metal boat rail launch, etc. (and I do not own a truck to haul to dump or dumpster). I know this sounds crazy but if you want to have a huge success in cleaning up the lake, below is an email I sent to Mayor Young over a month ago, which has gone unanswered.

Dear Mayor Young:

I am trying to figure out a way to allow all Lake Homeowners with a way to clean up miles and miles of shoreline which have not been seen in over 25+ years or more of the debris.

The problem with the APCo Renew Our Rivers Annual Clean Up or any clean up for that matter is getting volunteers, so I was wondering if Advanced (think this is who purchase Sunflower) would be willing to allow the homeowners to place all this lake debris at the end of their drives and on a specific day once a month for like the months of Dec and Jan they would send around trucks and crews to pick up all this debris.

If they would, we would make every effort to have their efforts noted in all the local papers such as an article entitled -Advanced Waste Supports Lake EcoSystem and then have an article written about their efforts in supporting the local community in cleaning up the lake. As this is a once in a life time opportunity to really make a difference in cleaning up the lake environment. Any ideas here or who I might contact would be most appreciated.

I know the above is a long shot, but never hurts to ask as certain corporations love to receive free publicity regarding helping others and especially supporting the environment.
