I was sitting in the surgical waiting room the day after the election. I was there quite a while, since Feb was having a procedure. We had been having some unseasonably chilly weather. This woman sitting across from me said very loudly to her companion "Well, My Daddy always said it would be a cold day in Hell when a ______ was elected President". I was close enough to reach out and slap her, but I didn't.

Another day, I was in the Xray waiting room (me, this time)waiting to be called. The TV was on and there was something on the news about Obama. This man said to the room at large, "well, what can you expect when you have a _____ President". A couple of people smirked and others, like me, just looked down.

I have no reason to make this up. I sat there for a moment unsure of what to do. I wanted to say something but I didn't. I just got up and moved. I didn't want to get into it with people I didn't know. I was really shocked. Not shocked that someone here would think that way, but that they would say something so offensive out loud. I'm ashamed of myself for not saying something, but on the other hand, it's not like anything I would say would have changed their mind.
