Most often, it is the spoken word that more carries the meaning of the messenger more than the written word. I have had to send letters and emails of apology because I voiced my thoughts a little too strongly. But what I had said was what I meant, I just had to reign in the feelings a bit. 

Woodward says in almost every interview that the email came after being shouted at for 30 minutes.  Woodward felt like his articles, books and thoughts had gotten under the skin of the administration, primarily because Woodward was right.  I go with Woodward on this, he felt a threat.  Period.
