While I don't doubt there may be Muslims that participated in various early wars I think the Peter Salem connection is mostly a Muslim apologist fabrication. Peter Salem was born in Framingham, MA around 1750 and was not a captured slave from an African Muslim nation. The attempt to connect him to the Muslim faith is the claim that Salem is derived from Saleem, which is Muslim for one who is peaceful. Numerous reputable black history websites (i.e., blackpast.org, etc.) say there is no evidence Peter Salem was Muslim.
What I think many pro-Muslim sites are relying on is the guesstimate that 10%-15% of slaves from Africa were Muslim and a certain number of slaves participated in the war for independence, civil war, war of 1812, etc. Probably not a bad assumption but also one that is subject to a lot of error. But the fact remains that due to their circumstances (i.e., the vast majority of Muslims in America were slaves) there role in these battles was very minor at best. Not their fault, just a historical fact.
While I agree we need to respect law-abiding Muslims we also have to recognize the general nature of the faith and the long-term goal to implement Sharia law worldwide. In 1991 the Muslim Brotherhood developed a long-term strategy for Europe and North America that involved immigration, birth rates, development of advocacy groups (i.e., CAIR, etc.) and other strategies to obtain their goals. They have been doing pretty well so far, especially in Europe.
The fact that Muslims do not speak up is an even more disturbing issue. There are a few like Fouad Ajami, Salahuddin Choudhury and others but polls show the majority of Muslims are at least sympathetic to jihad in one form or another. Part of it is fear of reprisal which is symptomatic of what ails Islam. No one fears for their life if they create a irreverent painting of Christ but everyone fears doing likewise with Mohammad, and some have been murdered. There is something deeply wrong and disturbing about Islam and until it is confronted and they come to grips with modernity we are in for the fight of our lives.
I don't know about you but I find it repulsive to imagine my daughters or granddaughters having to wear a bhurka. With all due respect I call those women sheeple because they are treated like farm animals by the husbands and fathers. An interesting movie for you to watch which gives a inkling of what we are dealing with is called "The Stoning of Soroya M". This is an epic battle between 21st century civilization and 7th century barbarism and unless we are prepared to fight to win we have already lost.
