I regularly use my iPhone and the app named GPS Drive by Motion-X. Takes me right to our place in the Coosa 20 area. Generally speaking the GPS apps for cell phones tend to use power like crazy so a car charger is recommended. They upgrade this app constantly and it gets better and better and better. It got to the point a year or two ago that I don't even think about getting a separate GPS device anymore. I've used GPS Drive all up and down the east coast as far as NYC. Excellent.

I've found AT&T service to be quite spotty in our part of the Lake but a Verizon iPhone should handle that problem, based on my experience with some Verizon devices. The GPS uses your cell data connection to download map data when you move into an area you haven't been before, so be sure to pull down your map data in an area of good coverage. With AT&T, that means before you get much north of Wetumpka. N of Wetumpka cell data and voice for AT&T is very intermittent. No problems with the GPS part though.
