No problem with auto GPSs. My wife has one and every now and then she used to let me borrow it. i'm just making the point that the iPhone Motion X app has become so good (and i'm sure other GPS apps have, for Androids also) that for over a year now, maybe two, it's never entered my mind that i ought to borrow or buy a dedicated GPS for my car.
i would say if you already have a smartphone and don't own a dedicated GPS unit, i can't really think of a compelling functional reason you'd want to go out and buy a separate GPS device for your car rather than a $1.99 application and a $10/year voice direction service to go with it for your iPhone. One device does it all and much more besides. One device, one set of wires to charge it, one plug for juice, and you're good to go.
in fairness, i guess for some folks the larger screen on a dedicated GPS device might make a difference. But i'm 63, have worn high-prescription specs for years (bifocals for well over a decade), and have no problem reading and interpreting the iPhone GPS display.
