Democrats in the U.S. Senate are pushing their latest proposal to legalize millions of illegal aliens. But offering such an amnesty has proved extremely unpopular with the American people when it has been tried in recent years, so Democrats are trying to "sweeten" the plan by adding some reasonable-sounding requirements that illegal aliens would supposedly have to meet to get on a path toward citizenship.

The most absurd, if not dishonest, of those proposals is that illegal aliens who have been working in the United States would be required to pay their back taxes.

Think about that for a minute. Vast numbers of illegal aliens work outside the normal payroll system, getting cash "off the books" rather than traceable checks for their work. Many others use false (often stolen) Social Security numbers when they apply for jobs, and some give employers false names altogether.

Do you think it is realistic or even possible for IRS agents to track down and tabulate the amount of back taxes owed by each of those illegal aliens, then to find each one to make him pay the back taxes he owes?

Of course not! The proposal is just a scheme to try to drum up support for amnesty among Washington politicians. It would let congressmen go back to their home states and claim to have "gotten tough" on illegal immigration -- while in fact they were smoothing the path toward amnesty.

The American people do not want amnesty for illegal aliens. It is high time the Democrat majority in Washington got that message.
