-What has made America great is that we try to be a country of laws.
-Why people flee others countries to get here is because their political systems are normally not countries of laws but countries of poor political systems, countries run on graft, corruption, etc. As a result the economic systems usually suck.
-Mack is right that a large number of South Americans come here to work. ..and some business owners exploit them. The solution is not open borders but a guest worker program (one that doesn't include anchor babies).
-Others on this forum are right that a lot of Mexicans and others come here for welfare. Their countries suck. So they come here. Can we just have open borders? NO, we couldn't assimilate 1/2 of 1% of teh world's needy before we would be overwhelemed. Even teh craziest of liberals have a hard time defending borders open to everyone, so even they recognize there is a need for an immigration program that has reasonable numbers.
-People say we are a country of immigrants. We are. But the big immigration waves of teh 19th and 20th centuries, when most of our immigrant ancesters came, were times when there were no immigration restrictions on numbers ...and no welfare programs.
-To allow open borders now is national suicide. So we need a rational immigration program that includes immigrant numbers that cover our national needs, a guest worker program that provides temporary relief in seasonal or boom/bust industries, and an enforcement process that recognizes we are a country of laws that must be enforced ...or legally changed.
