BB, you are correct. It is amazing how little people understand the Civil War in the context of the times in which it occurred. While it is true slavery was a major issue to many in the North, and of course to the large plantation owners (the rich guys in the South)it mattered a lot as well. But this is an overall very small percentage. The vast majority in the South were dirt poor subsistence farmers. It was not until after the Civil War that people began to think of themselves as Americans first. Before that, people thought of themselves as first and foremost, citizens of their State, and secondly, citizens of U.S. of America. Revisionist history ignores this fact. The average Southern soldier did not fight to preserve slavery. Nor did they care about ending slavery, really, as it had almost nothing to do with their lives. When the call to arms to protect their STATE was issued, they enlisted. It was a matter of honor. It was that simple. And for nearly 5 years the bloodiest war ever fought by Americans followed. It is incredibly disrespectful to suggest that the heritage of the Southern soldier, including the flag, should be intentionally forgotten and stricken from our history.
