Having grown up in the north I can tell you I have no issue with the confederate flag. Yes, the civil war ultimately degenerated into a battle over slavery. But the central issue was one of federalism and state's rights. Did the federal government have the right to force states to do certain things? Lincoln wisely made this an issue of slavery because he was losing support in the north and felt that the desire for abolition would carry the day and it did.

I know a bunch of people that fly the confederate flag and don't have a racist bone in their body. For them it is all about federalism and state's rights. But if NASCAR wants to ban the confederate flag they can have at it. I'm not a fan and I can tell you that it doesn't keep me away and banning it will not get me there. Just not interested. Seems their calculation is that more will come with the flag gone than will stop coming because it is banned. Time will tell........
